The Aran Knitwear
The Aran islands are three rocky isles guarding the mouth of Galway Bay in western Ireland. The Aran Jumper revisits a classic form of knitwear originally hailing from Ireland. The many combinations of stitch seen on the sweater are rich in symbolism, for example the knitting stitch twist is worn by fishermen to bring them luck. The Diamond stitch promises success and wealth, while the Aran basket stitch augurs a fruitful day at sea. The Aran knitwear pays tribute to the artistic, artisanal spirit of Niki de Saint Phalle, both in its volume and in its unusual shape.
